MANILA, Philippines—Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Rommel Marbil said on Monday that cops should be more transparent in reporting crimes.
Marbil made the pronouncement during the command conference in Camp Crame.
“Let us be transparent about crimes,” Marbil said. “If there is an increase (in crimes), it’s important that we acknowledge it so we can better understand the situation, respond appropriately, and find effective solutions.
“This is the true essence of public service,” he added.
Amid the reminder, the PNP still reported an 18.4-percent decrease in the crime rate nationwide in the first quarter of the year compared to the last quarter of 2024.
Heightened alert
Nevertheless, the PNP is still placed on heightened alert this Holy Week.
“Let us ensure the safety of our people. Let them feel the presence of the police force in checkpoints and chokepoints,” Marbil also told his men.
The PNP will deploy 40,283 personnel nationwide for the holidays.
Gun ban
These personnel will be tasked to continue the implementation of the gun ban, among other tasks.
The election gun ban began nationwide on January 11 and will last until June 12.
The Comelec deputizes the Philippine National Police, as required by law, to perform duties relative to the conduct of elections, such as enforcing the gun ban.
Meanwhile, Marbil reiterated his call for cops to remain apolitical, citing recent incidents involving PNP personnel allegedly engaging in partisan activities.
“Do not allow yourselves to be used by politicians. Remain apolitical,” Marbil said. “We serve the Filipino people.”
